How we decide what deserves a place here.

ToolFinder is not a scraped list. Every tool on this site was opened, used, and judged by a human editor. This page explains exactly how — and what we refuse to do.

Why we built this

Search for "best AI tool" today and you get the same thirty names repeated across forty listicles, most of which were written by someone who never opened the product. The descriptions are paraphrased press releases. The rankings are affiliate placements. None of it answers the only question that matters: which one should I use, for my specific task, right now?

We built ToolFinder to answer that question. Every entry carries a written verdict — what the tool is genuinely best at, where it disappoints, and which alternative beats it in a given scenario. If we cannot say something specific and useful about a tool, it does not get listed.

What gets listed

A tool only appears here if it clears all four of these:

How we test

Testing is deliberately unglamorous. We give each tool the same small set of real tasks — a messy paragraph to rewrite, a 40-page PDF to compress, a product photo with a difficult background — and we judge the output the way you would: did we get something usable, and how much cleanup did it need afterwards?

We care much less about benchmark scores than about friction. How many clicks before the tool does the thing? Does it lose your work? Does the free tier quietly watermark everything? Those details decide whether a tool survives a week in someone's actual workflow, and they are almost never mentioned in the marketing.

What our labels mean

Editor’s Pick

The one or two tools in a category we would recommend without knowing anything about you. Roughly twelve tools site-wide carry this.

Best for

The specific job or person this tool suits best — written as a scenario, never as "great for everyone".

Our note

The editor's reasoning in one or two sentences, including the caveat we would tell a friend.

Head to head

Scenario-by-scenario comparisons within a category — "if you need X, choose A; if you need Y, choose B".

Our independence

We do not sell placement. No tool pays to be listed, to rank higher, or to earn a Pick. Some outbound links are affiliate links, which is how the site stays free — but commercial arrangements have never once decided a ranking here, and never will.

When a vendor gives us a free account for testing, we say so in the review. When we change our mind about a tool, we change the review and note what changed. Our incentive is your return visit, not any single vendor's goodwill.

How often we update

AI tools move fast, and a review written eight months ago can be actively misleading. We revisit every Pick quarterly, and we re-test immediately when a tool changes its pricing, its model, or its free tier. Each review page shows the date it was last checked so you can judge how fresh the advice is.

Corrections

If we got something wrong, we would rather hear about it than be right. Send the tool name and what we missed to our contact page, and we will verify it and correct the page — with a note explaining the change where it matters.
